To all those who missed out on a mother's love: on a cold day, wear gloves, a warm hat, and make sure your coat is suitable for the weather and clean.

Intriguing. As a punchy little dystopian nightmare, I like it. As a satirical attack on Obama--which it's hard not to see it as-- I dislike it. I imagine Dick Cheney enrolling in a creative writing class and coming up with something like this.

Actually it's not an attack on Obama. Perhaps some of his rhetorical music is present, but no, not an embodiment or attack.

Maybe Hussein blended with Ceauşescu channeled by John Edwards with slight overtones of The President. Not intended as direct political satire.

Cheney? Ouch.

Sorry, the timing with the State of the Union made it hard not to connect the two. (Did you watch Obama's Q&A with the Republican house members? I was impressed by the civility on both sides. But especially impressed by O.)

I'm glad you're continuing to crank out these pieces. You're on a roll, man! Keep it up.

Yes, the timing of the post was bad. I wrote the first draft in December. I believe that Obama isn't evil, but the rhetorical influence is obvious.

Missed the meeting, but heard it was good.

It sounds like you might be talking about yourself. I hope it's nonsense rather than an accurate reflection on your dark side.

Dark sides are ... dark. I thought this was the best sentence: "It might be the hangman’s noose recorded on an I-Phone, or maybe a bullet in an abandoned army barracks."

So vague, and yet so vivid.

Mssrs Webb and McCain, Should we be posting our short fiction on the Supple Mental? Do we want to keep the day side fiction free? Or is it because the stuff of "Big Jon, Bully" is especially dystopian?

"Final Instructions" was good, too. I missed the link to it, if you posted it. I liked the sunny locations.

Whatever you do, do NOT immediately go and rent "Satan's Brew".

How's this for dark?

To deal with Zawahiri, Egyptian intelligence agents devised a fiendish plan. They lured a thirteen year old boy named Ahmed into an apartment with the promise of juice and videos. Ahmed was the son of Mohammed Sharraf, a well-known Egyptian fundamentalist and a senior member of al-Jihad. The boy was drugged and sodomized; when he was awakened, he was confronted with photographs of the homosexual activity and threatened with the prospect of having them shown to his father. For the child, the consequences of such a disclosure were overwhelming. "It could even be that the father would kill him," a source close to Zawahiri admitted.

Egyptian intelligence forced him to recruit another child, Mus'ab, whose father, Abu al-Faraj, was also in al-Jihad and served as the treasurer of al-Qaeda. Mus'ab endured the same humiliating initiation of drugs and sexual abuse and was forced to turn against his family. The agents taught the boys how to plant microphones in their own homes and photograph documents. A number of arrests followed because of the information produced by the boy spies.

from The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright

Zawahiri did, in fact, have the boys shot.

At this point it's obvious that our support of the fucker Mubarek will come back to haunt us big time.

About the Supplemental, I guess I feel reticent about posting long pieces of questionable worth on a MAJOR Catholic blog site.
